Indoor Air Quality and Its Importance to Buildings

indoor-air-quality-testing

Why is healthy indoor air quality important? Healthy Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is an essential element in maintaining the comfort and well-being of the building occupants. Having good IAQ is a high priority for many employers, building owners, and operators as they strive to provide a safe and healthy working environment for the tenants, office employees, and visitors.

IAQ is one of the many determinants of a building’s economics, functionality, and quality as poor IAQ can adversely affect the work performance and health of the building occupants.

Poor IAQ can result in carbon monoxide stress, allergy, and asthma from exposure to indoor pollutants etc.

The following are a few of the benefits of maintaining a building’s IAQ following routine testing:

  1. Taking action on IAQ improves the overall experience of occupants and visitors.
  2. Good IAQ supports healthly living, productivity, and comfort.
  3. Good IAQ potentially reduces health care expenses, employee absenteeism, low productivity, and negative impressions from visitors.
  4. Good IAQ can help to reduce long term operating costs of the building.

Good IAQ can be achieved through the consideration and management of indoor air pollution levels and thermal environmental parameters.

Forsspac provides Indoor Air Quality Testing which can determine the levels of common pollutants, air and equipment condition:

  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Nitrogen Dioxide
  • Hydrothermal (humidity, temperature)
  • Precipitated Particulate (pollen, dust, fiberglass, dead skin cells)
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (formaldehyde and aldehyde)
  • Fresh air ventilation rate
  • Airflow distribution
  • Duct condition
  • Equipment condition
  • Air vent size and condition

Forsspac recommends that all buildings should be tested every 6 months or at least once per year for IAQ as building conditions can change significantly in a very short period of time.

To sum up, good indoor air quality improves the overall experience of building visitors and occupants in whatever activity they are engaged in contributing towards a more productive working environment. Knowing what causes poor indoor air quality and how to improve it is the first step to making the building a safer and more comfortable place to work and live in.
